For those who don’t recognize it and are too lazy to read the article, the car in the comparison photo is the Volvo ECC which predated this car by half a decade:

While the S60 and S80 based on the ECC design hadn’t been released yet in 1997, the S40 and C70 were already taking styling cues (albeit a bit more conservatively).
